Dhaka, Aug 05 (V7N) – At least ten people sustained burn injuries after a symbolic gas balloon exploded during a cultural program on Manik Mia Avenue Tuesday afternoon, setting off a fire that spread to nearby electrical wires.
The incident occurred around 3 PM, during the day-long ‘36 July Utjapon’ program held to commemorate the first anniversary of the historic July Uprising. The explosion took place as students and members of the public released a symbolic gas balloon ‘helicopter’ to mark the 'Fascist's Escape Moment', symbolizing the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year.
Following the explosion, flames quickly spread to overhead electrical wiring, causing panic among attendees. The fire was later extinguished using a drone equipped for emergency response, according to on-site witnesses.
The injured were immediately rescued and transported to the emergency department of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. The institute’s resident surgeon, Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, confirmed the incident and the number of burn victims.
“This is a serious situation. All ten are currently under observation, and our team is providing necessary medical support,” Dr. Rahman told reporters.
Despite the incident, the ‘July Rebirth’ cultural program—organized to honor the martyrs and spirit of the July Movement—has continued with additional security and crowd management in place.
The program began at 12 noon, featuring performances by several renowned artists and bands, including Parsha, Elita Karim, F Minor, Shunno, Warphase, and Artcell. A special drone drama titled ‘Do You Miss Me’ and a drone light show are also scheduled later in the evening.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the balloon explosion and reviewing safety protocols for public gatherings involving flammable materials.
