Santa Cruz, Dec 15 (V7N) — Heavy rains have triggered severe flooding in Bolivia’s eastern Santa Cruz region, killing at least seven people and leaving more than 20 others missing, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua.
Torrential rainfall on Friday and Saturday caused a river embankment to collapse, leading to widespread destruction. Several government buildings were damaged, and at least two bridges were washed away as swollen river waters inundated nearby areas.
Large swathes of residential neighborhoods have been submerged, trapping hundreds of residents in floodwaters. Emergency rescue teams are continuing operations in the affected areas, working to evacuate stranded families and provide relief.
Authorities said at least 600 families have been affected by the flooding. In addition to human casualties, cattle have been swept away or stranded, while uprooted trees and debris have further complicated rescue efforts.
In response to the worsening situation, Bolivian President Luis Arce has established a crisis coordination center at the government palace and is personally overseeing relief and rescue operations, officials said.
The government has warned that the situation may deteriorate further if rainfall continues, as river levels remain dangerously high.
