Dhaka, Mar 14 (V7N) — Shamima Sattar Mimu, a National Sports Award-winning athlete and former official of Bangladesh’s athletics administration, has passed away after suffering a heart attack at her residence in Dhaka, according to the Bangladesh Athletics Federation.
She breathed her last at around 11:00 pm on Friday (Mar 13). She had been suffering from diabetes and heart-related complications for a long time.
In a statement, the Bangladesh Athletics Federation said that Mimu had served the country’s athletics community with dedication for many years. She was a former member of the federation’s executive committee and also served as Deputy Director (Training) at the Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protishthan (BKSP), the country’s premier sports training institute.
According to her final wish, her body is being taken from her residence in Dhaka to Dinajpur, where she will be laid to rest beside her father’s grave.
Throughout her career, Mimu played a significant role in the development of athletics in Bangladesh. In addition to her contributions as an athlete, she also served as a coach and judge in numerous national and international athletics competitions and training programs.
In recognition of her outstanding contribution to athletics, she was awarded the prestigious National Sports Award in 2000.
She also received several other honors, including Best Athlete awards from the Bangladesh Sports Writers Association and the Bangladesh Sports Journalists Association. Among her other recognitions were a place in the Anannya Top Ten list, the Kobi Nurul Amin Gold Medal for her contributions as an athlete and sports organizer, and a Gold Medal from the Bangladesh Women’s Initiative Center.
Her death has been widely mourned in the country’s sporting community. The president, general secretary, executive committee members, officials, coaches, athletes, and associated members of the Bangladesh Athletics Federation expressed deep sorrow over her passing.
The federation also prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and extended heartfelt condolences to her bereaved family.
