Abu Dhabi, Sept 19 (V7N) – Sri Lanka sealed their place in the Asia Cup Super Four stage with a commanding six-wicket win over Afghanistan on Thursday, a result that also confirmed Bangladesh’s progression to the next round. The defeat ended Afghanistan’s campaign, while Sri Lanka advanced alongside Bangladesh from the group.
At the Zayed Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka dominated early after winning the toss, reducing Afghanistan to 79 for 6. However, Mohammad Nabi produced a stunning late counterattack, smashing five sixes in the final over. His 22-ball 60, which included six sixes and three fours, lifted Afghanistan to a competitive 169 for 8. Rashid Khan contributed 24 from 23 balls, sharing a 35-run stand with Nabi. Ibrahim Zadran scored 24, while opener Sadequllah Atal added 18.
In reply, Sri Lanka lost Pathum Nissanka (6) at 22 and Misara (4) at 47, but Kusal Mendis anchored the chase with an unbeaten 74 off 52 balls, laced with 10 boundaries. He received support from Kusal Perera (28 off 20) and Charith Asalanka (17 off 12), before Kamindu Mendis sealed the win with a quickfire 26 off 13 balls.
Among the bowlers, Nuwan Thushara starred for Sri Lanka, claiming four wickets for just 18 runs in four overs.
With the victory, Sri Lanka joined Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan in the Super Four. Bangladesh will now face their group rivals Sri Lanka, as well as India and Pakistan, with the top two teams from the Super Four advancing to the final.
