Dhaka, July 29 (V7N) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that reforms are meaningless unless they benefit the common people. He also pledged that if the BNP returns to power, it will take steps to rehabilitate the families of martyrs and victims of political violence.

He made these remarks on Tuesday (July 29) at a program organized by 'Mayer Dak' in Banani, Dhaka.

“No One Cared for the Families Who Sacrificed”

Fakhrul criticized successive governments for failing to support those who lost their loved ones in political struggles.

"Many have climbed the ladder of power, become ministers, or grown businesses—but no one has looked back at the families of those who sacrificed everything for democracy," he said.

He alleged that the current government has done little for the children and families of those killed or disappeared during political crackdowns. He expressed hope that the government will finally take initiative to rehabilitate them.

On the Disappeared: “If We Can’t Bring Them Back, We Must Support Their Families”

Fakhrul addressed the issue of enforced disappearances, saying:

"I don't know if we can bring back those who have gone missing, but there is still an opportunity to stand by their families. If we don't do anything, then we are all complicit."

He also criticized the lack of progress following the report by the Missing Persons Commission, noting that despite official submissions, no significant action has been taken to trace the missing individuals.

BNP’s Pledge

Mirza Fakhrul assured that the BNP would prioritize justice and support for victims of political repression, especially the families of those labeled as martyrs of democracy. He emphasized that genuine political reform must prioritize human dignity, not elite interests.

The program, organized by Mayer Dak, a platform of families of the disappeared, was attended by victims’ relatives, human rights advocates, and political leaders.
