Dhaka, July 24 (V7N) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has strongly criticized former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque, calling his verdict on the caretaker government system “anti-state” and demanding exemplary punishment under the law.
He made the remarks during an emergency press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Thursday afternoon (July 24).
“The verdict given by Khairul Haque led to the abolition of the caretaker government system by the Awami League, which is the root of today’s political crisis. It shattered public trust in the judiciary,” said Mirza Fakhrul.
He added that the BNP is satisfied that action is being taken against Khairul Haque, even if it is “late.”
Meanwhile, the BNP leader also opposed the reported demolition of the Shishu Academy building, saying:
“If this building is demolished, it will severely hinder the intellectual and mental development of children. We strongly protest the move.”
Earlier on Thursday morning, the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque from his Dhanmondi residence. He faces three cases filed in Dhaka and Narayanganj, involving allegations of illegal land acquisition and abuse of power.
Justice ABM Khairul Haque was appointed as the 19th Chief Justice of Bangladesh on September 27, 2010. While serving in the Appellate Division, he delivered the controversial verdict that abolished the caretaker government provision from the Constitution—triggering widespread political debate and unrest.
