Dhaka, July 15 (V7N) – BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that the historic July Uprising will be given state and constitutional recognition, with plans to include it in the Fourth Schedule of the Constitution. The move aims to permanently solidify the legitimacy of the movement and ensure future governments cannot question the role of its participants.

Speaking at a discussion meeting organized by Chhatra Dal at Dhaka University’s TSC on Tuesday afternoon, Salahuddin said, “The constitutional recognition of the July Uprising will protect the democratic spirit of the movement. It will also give legal and historical legitimacy to the current interim government.”

He revealed that BNP had submitted its opinion on the July Declaration five months ago, and following a second review, resubmitted its recommendations. “There should be no confusion regarding our position on the July Declaration. We are committed to the spirit of the movement,” he said.

Salahuddin expressed concern over delays in issuing the July Charter, noting uncertainty over whether it would be finalized by August 5, but remained hopeful.

He also stressed the importance of maintaining anti-fascist unity, warning that attempts are underway to divide the coalition of pro-democracy forces. “Even on this historic day, we must not forget the oppression we have suffered. The Awami League must be held accountable as a political party,” he added.

On the subject of justice and accountability, Salahuddin cautioned against mass political reprisals. “If thousands are put on trial without due process, it will push the nation toward a dangerous politics of revenge. The law must determine who will face justice, not vengeance,” he concluded.
