Bagerhat, 16 Aug (V7N) – Morelganj Upazila in Bagerhat was abuzz with political activity on Saturday ahead of the long-anticipated BNP Upazila Council, as multiple candidates and their supporters engaged in campaign activities across the region. After 18 years, grassroots-level BNP members are set to vote and elect their new leadership, with keen interest surrounding the outcome.

On Friday, FM Shamim Ahsan, joint convener and a candidate for the post of Upazila BNP President, conducted a day-long campaign featuring street meetings and a motorcade procession that visited several key areas, including Kalikabari, Amtola, Daibagnyahat, Badhal Bazar, Bongram, Hoglapasha, Boualpur, Mahishpura, Polerhat, Teligati-Dhuligati, Herma, Panchkaran's Panchgao Bazar, and Natun Bazar.

Speaking during various campaign stops, Shamim Ahsan alleged that certain groups were attempting to influence the council election through threats and pressure tactics. "This is not how votes should be secured," he said. "Support must be earned by winning the hearts of the grassroots workers." He highlighted his active role in the BNP’s student and national political movements, claiming to have stood beside activists during challenging times involving arrests, lawsuits, and repression.

BNP leaders including Md. Khalilur Rahman, Master Zahid Hossain, Niazur Rahman Molla, Shahjahan Hawlader, Abdul Awal, and former JCD Vice President of Jiudhara Union, GS Ripon, were present during the rallies and meetings.

The upcoming council, considered highly significant due to the long gap since the last one, has created an atmosphere of anticipation among the party’s rank and file. For the position of President, three candidates are contesting: Md. Shahidul Haque Babul, FM Shamim Ahsan, and Professor Abdul Awal.

For General Secretary, the candidates are Fakir Rasel Al Islam, Advocate Mehedi Hasan Yad, and Abjal Hossain Zomaddar. Meanwhile, six candidates are vying for two positions of Organizational Secretary: Principal Sabina Yasmin Tulu, Khelafat Hossain Khasru, Professor Faizul Haque, Yunus Ali Akon, Jahangir Hossain Lavlu, and Talukdar Firoz Shah.

A total of 1,136 voters will participate in electing the President, General Secretary, and two Organizational Secretaries through this council.

With the council just hours away, candidates continue to seek support from grassroots members, who hold the decisive vote in reshaping the leadership of Morelganj BNP.
