Dhaka, July 30 (V7N) – Hong Kong-based Handa Industries Company has announced a significant investment of US$ 250 million in Bangladesh’s textile and garment sector, marking one of the largest single Chinese investments in this industry in the country.

The announcement was made by Han Chun, Chairman of Handa Industries Limited, during a meeting with Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka on Tuesday (July 29).

Initially, Handa Industries had committed to investing US$ 150 million following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed at an investment conference held in April. However, the investment figure was later revised upwards to US$ 250 million owing to “strong cooperation” from key Bangladeshi government agencies such as BIDA, BEZA, and BEPZA.

Factory Plans and Employment Goals

According to the updated plan, Handa Industries will establish three production units in Bangladesh:

  • Two garment processing factories

  • One knitting and dyeing unit

These facilities are expected to create employment for 25,000 people.

Speaking at the meeting, Chairman Han Chun expressed optimism about the investment environment in Bangladesh:

“After discussing with BIDA, BEZA, and BEPZA, we have gained confidence and decided to expand our investment. We aim to introduce the latest technology to Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry through our projects.”

Encouragement from the Chief Advisor

Professor Muhammad Yunus welcomed Handa’s enhanced investment plan, stating:

“You should take the lead in Chinese investment in Bangladesh’s textile sector and encourage other Chinese investors to follow suit.”

Han Chun also presented the design of a garment factory to be built in the Mirsarai Economic Zone, which impressed the Chief Advisor.

“It looks like a wonderful painting to me,” Yunus remarked.

Next Steps

It has been reported that the first-phase $80 million land lease agreement for the Mirsarai factory will be signed on Wednesday. The second-phase planning, including land allocation and facilities, is expected to be finalized by end of 2025.
