Dhaka, July 23 (V7N) – In the aftermath of the deadly plane crash at Milestone School and College in Uttara, the government has taken steps to ensure the accuracy of casualty data amid growing public concern over misleading information circulating on social media.
Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor, announced on his verified Facebook account that two government advisors have instructed the college authorities to immediately establish a control room on campus. This control room will be responsible for compiling and updating the official number of injured and deceased, based on daily records and cross-checking with the college registrar.
The decision came after many students shared firsthand accounts of the crash and voiced their frustration over misinformation. Shafiqul Alam stated,
“I visited Milestone College yesterday and spoke with bereaved families, students, and teachers. The entire atmosphere was heavy with grief and anger. Students expressed their experiences and concern over false casualty figures.”
Drawing on his experience covering national tragedies since 2002, the press secretary emphasized that it is nearly impossible to hide the actual death toll in such incidents in Bangladesh.
“Families naturally report loved ones as ‘missing’ when they cannot find them, and later confirm deaths through hospitals or the administration,” he explained.
To ensure transparency, the advisors have recommended the inclusion of both current and former students in the control room team. This initiative is expected to be fully operational by today (Wednesday). Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health is continuing to provide regular updates on the condition of the injured, with support from the Bangladesh Army.
Shafiqul Alam also stressed that the government has no intention of concealing casualty numbers.
“The advisors stayed at Milestone College for over nine hours to assist peacefully, without any use of force. They remained until the situation was under control.”
Concluding his statement, he expressed deep sorrow for the lives lost, calling them martyrs of this national tragedy.
“Let us all work together to improve our air defense system so that such accidents do not happen again. The government is committed to strengthening national security and ensuring zero airspace accidents.”
The crash has so far claimed 32 lives, including students, teachers, and a pilot, with more than 160 people still under treatment at various hospitals across the capital.
