Dhaka, July 12 (V7N) – Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Baharul Alam has said that the Bangladesh Police are in the process of preparing a list of individuals who have established illegal dominance across the country, particularly in Dhaka, as part of a broader initiative to eliminate extortion and restore law and order.

He made these remarks on Saturday afternoon while visiting the Dhaka District Police Lines and the Traffic and Driving School at Mill Barracks in Old Dhaka.

“The police are taking a strict stance against extortion and anarchy nationwide. We are actively working to identify and list those who have established unlawful dominance in different regions, especially the capital,” said IGP Baharul Alam.

He also emphasized the need for political cooperation, stating, “The role of political parties is crucial in improving the overall law and order situation. We expect their full cooperation in this effort.”

Referring to the aftermath of the recent mass uprising, the IGP admitted that the morale of the police force remains affected and requires rebuilding.

Earlier in the day, Home Affairs Advisor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury echoed concerns about law enforcement, stating that while the slow judicial process is not the fault of the law enforcement agencies, their lack of neutrality remains a concern.

Speaking about the recent killing of a businessman near Mitford Hospital, the advisor said, “Law enforcement agencies are more active than before. Arresting the criminals falls under the Home Ministry’s jurisdiction, but ensuring their punishment is the responsibility of the Law Ministry.”

Describing the incident as deeply disturbing in a civilized society, he added, “Our society has become increasingly intolerant. This must change. Everyone—from policymakers to parents, teachers, doctors, and citizens—must come forward with a sense of responsibility to prevent such tragedies.”
