Dhaka, June 16 (V7N) – The national political dialogue, initiated by the National Consensus Commission for institutional reform, is set to resume on Tuesday, following the Eid-ul-Azha holidays. The dialogue sessions will continue until Thursday, after which there will be a scheduled pause before further discussions resume.

The process was formally launched on June 2 by Chief Adviser and Commission Chairperson Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The second phase of the dialogue began the following day, engaging representatives from over 30 political parties and alliances.

During the initial sessions, the participants debated several major issues including:

  • Article 70 of the Constitution,

  • Direct elections to women’s reserved seats, and

  • The role and reform of parliamentary standing committees.

Although the tenure of the caretaker government was also slated for discussion on the first day, time constraints prevented the issue from being addressed. The three topics that were discussed remained inconclusive, requiring further debate.

These unfinished agenda items will be revisited when the talks resume tomorrow. Additionally, two new and highly sensitive topics are scheduled for discussion:

  • The formation of a bicameral legislature, and

  • The appointment process of the Chief Justice.

The upcoming sessions will be broadcast live on BTV (Bangladesh Television), ensuring transparency and public engagement.

Presiding over this week’s discussions will be Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chair of the Consensus Commission. The Commission has reiterated its commitment to building broad-based political agreement on key constitutional and institutional reforms.

Observers say this dialogue process may significantly influence the future political structure of Bangladesh if consensus is achieved among the diverse political actors involved.
