Rangpur, Sept 19 (V7N) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has demanded that the agreements reached in the National Consensus Commission be given constitutional authority through an official proclamation and a nationwide referendum. He cautioned that if the proposals are instead sent to Parliament for validation, they might be rejected in the same way as during what he termed the “previous fascist government.”
Speaking as the chief guest at a rally held at Rangpur Public Library ground, Porwar reiterated Jamaat’s five-point agenda, which includes holding the next national election in February based on the “July Charter,” the introduction of proportional representation (PR) in the electoral system, the establishment of legal legitimacy for political reforms, justice for genocide, ensuring a level playing field, and trial of those who supported authoritarianism.
He accused the interim government of failing to act neutrally and claimed that this has compelled his party to take to the streets. “We want elections in February under the July Charter’s framework. Without legal recognition of reforms, justice for mass killings, and equal opportunities for all parties, fair polls will not be possible,” he said.
The rally, presided over by Rangpur Metropolitan Jamaat Amir ATM Azam Khan, was also addressed by Jamaat’s central working committee members Principal Maulana Momtaz Uddin and Mahbubur Rahman Belal, along with District Jamaat Amir Golam Rabbani and other leaders.
Following the speeches, a protest procession joined by over a thousand Jamaat leaders and activists marched from the Public Library ground, parading through key roads in the city.
The gathering highlighted Jamaat-e-Islami’s firm stance on implementing the July Charter as the foundation for upcoming elections, reflecting growing political agitation ahead of February’s expected polls.
