Dhaka, Aug 27 (V7N) - Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) staged a demonstration on Tuesday, blocking the road in front of Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka. The protest was organized under the banner of “Prokoushol Odhikar Andolon” to press home a three-point demand.

According to Sakibul Haque Lipu, General Secretary of the “Prokoushol Odhikar Andolon,” hundreds of BUET students took to the streets on Tuesday afternoon, demanding urgent government action on three key issues related to engineering education and employment. The students gathered in front of Hotel InterContinental and blocked the road, disrupting traffic and drawing attention to their movement.

The protesters issued an ultimatum to the government, stating that they would escalate their movement if their demands were not met by 8 PM on the same day. While the specific details of the demands were not disclosed in the brief initial statement, previous movements by the group have focused on issues such as proper recognition of engineering degrees, reform in public sector recruitment processes, and enhanced representation of engineers in policymaking.

Speaking to reporters, Sakibul Haque Lipu emphasized the urgency of their cause. He said the students had made repeated appeals to the relevant authorities, but no effective steps had been taken. “We are giving the government until 8 PM. If our demands are ignored, we will launch a more intense phase of protest,” he warned.

The protest comes amid rising frustration among engineering students over what they perceive as neglect and underrepresentation in national development frameworks and job sectors. The group has previously organized seminars and submitted memorandums, but the roadblock marks a significant escalation in their activism.

Law enforcement personnel were present at the scene to maintain order, though the protest remained peaceful at the time of reporting.

University authorities and government officials have yet to make a formal statement regarding the students' ultimatum and demands.
