Mongla, Mar 10, (V7N) – Hundreds of residents of Burirdanga Union, Mongla upazila formed a human chain and staged demonstrations Tuesday afternoon against alleged extortion by local BNP President Habibur Rahman Biswas.
The protest, held at Digraj Rajar, drew men and women from different wards of the union, including victims of alleged extortion. Speakers at the event accused Habib of occupying land and enclosures, extorting money from oil pumps, hotels and shops, and insulting local women. They demanded his removal from the party post within 48 hours, warning of tougher programmes if action is not taken.
Among those addressing the human chain were Md. Zulfiqar Ali, Vice President of Burirdanga Union BNP; Sheikh Jihadul Islam Mridul, Upazila Jubo Dal leader; Moni Patwary, Senior Vice President of Ward 3 BNP; and Nur Nahar Begum, Upazila Mohila Dal Publicity Secretary.
Later, Upazila BNP President A. Mannan Hawlader and General Secretary Abu Hossain Poni echoed the demand, citing Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s and State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Lion Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam’s pledge to eliminate extortion, occupation, terrorism and drugs. They urged immediate expulsion of Habib from his party post to uphold that commitment.
