BAY OF BENGAL, Nov 12 (V7N) — The Bangladesh Navy rescued 24 fishermen and their trawler, Madina-6, after its engine failed while drifting in the Bay of Bengal. The rescue operation was conducted by the naval ship Banuja Oparajeyo, which was on routine patrol at the time.
According to a statement from the Navy’s Khulna command, the patrol vessel spotted the trawler approximately 29 nautical miles south of the Mongla Fairway Buoy. The trawler was identified as stranded and in distress via the ship’s radar, prompting immediate action.
Upon reaching the location, naval personnel found that the trawler’s engine had failed, leaving the crew without communication equipment in deep sea waters. The Navy provided the fishermen with essential food, clean water, and first aid.
The disabled trawler had departed from Kutubdia on October 29 for fishing purposes and became stranded due to mechanical failure. Despite rough waves and adverse weather conditions, the Navy successfully towed the trawler and its crew over a distance of 35 nautical miles to Hiran Point near Mongla Port. The vessel was then handed over to the Coast Guard Western Zone for further proceedings.
All 24 fishermen aboard the trawler are reported to be safe and in good health.
