Madhabpur, Sept 8 (V7N) – Aggrieved customers of Nishan Society in Madhabpur Upazila staged a human chain, protest march, and highway blockade on Sunday, demanding the return of their deposited funds.

The protest began at 10:00 am in front of the society’s main office in Teliapara, where customers gathered for a human chain. Later, at around 12:00 pm, protesters blocked the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Jagdishpur Temuhani Muktiyoddha Chowrasta, halting traffic for nearly an hour and leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded. Police arrived at the scene to restore order.

Speakers at the human chain alleged that Nishan Society had been operating in Habiganj and neighboring districts, promising monthly returns of Tk 2,000–3,000 per lakh of deposited funds. Over time, the society reportedly collected nearly Tk 150 crore from local residents. When customers requested refunds, officials allegedly stalled the process. Under mounting pressure, directors Sayem and Salman reportedly went into hiding, followed by Chairman Belal and his wife Amena. Managing Director Jalal Uddin made several promises but has also disappeared from public view.

Victims shared personal hardships during the protest. Nurul Islam from Goachnagar stated that he lost his deposited money after selling land. Manik Mia from Surma claimed that his father, Arju Mia, passed away due to stress over unpaid funds. Romana Begum, a tea worker from the same area, said she could not retrieve her hard-earned savings. Protesters described their current situation as extremely uncertain and distressing.

The demonstrators urged the government to take control of Nishan Society’s assets and ensure refunds to the affected customers.

Madhabpur Police Officer-in-Charge, (OC) Mohammad Shahidullah confirmed that the situation is currently under control. He advised that customers seeking refunds should follow legal channels, warning that blocking highways or creating disorder will not resolve the issue.
