Dhaka, Sep 04 (V7N) – Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, now an accused turned state witness, has claimed that he was appointed to the top police post for a second time despite strong objections due to internal conflicts in the force centering on Gopalganj.

Testifying before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Thursday, Mamun alleged that even when he was reappointed on a contractual basis, he declined requests from the then Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary.

The testimony came during his cross-examination in the crimes against humanity case related to the July genocide, conducted by State Defense Counsel Amir Hossain before a judicial panel led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumdar, Chairman of the tribunal.

Mamun had earlier testified on September 2, stating that the decision to use additional force during the July coup was “politically motivated” and that instructions to use lethal weapons in the movement came directly from former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The Chief Prosecutor described his testimony as irrefutable evidence of enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and the July massacre during the Awami League’s tenure.

So far, 36 witnesses, including Mamun, have testified in the case against Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and others accused.
