Dhaka, June 26 (V7N) – A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal in connection with a case filed by Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

The court issued the remand order on Thursday afternoon (June 26) after Awal was produced before it by the police. Investigators had earlier sought a 10-day remand for interrogation during the case proceedings. After hearing arguments from both sides, the court allowed a reduced remand period of three days.

While appearing in court, Habibul Awal defended himself, stating:

“The dummy election was not organized solely for me. As the head of the Election Commission, I had a role, but the costs were shared overall. I humbly submit that every election held under a partisan government tends to become controversial.”

In response, the state counsel remarked:

“Don’t try to punish the saint while covering up your own misdeeds.”

Earlier, on Wednesday afternoon (June 25), Awal was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police from a relative’s residence in the city’s Moghbazar area. He was later shown arrested in a case filed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

The BNP filed the case on June 22, accusing 24 individuals, including current and former election commissioners, of manipulating results in the 12th National Parliamentary Election held in 2024.

It is worth noting that Kazi Habibul Awal served as the Chief Election Commissioner during that election. Other commissioners during his tenure included Md. Alamgir, Anisur Rahman, Begum Rashida Sultana, and Brigadier General (Retd.) Ahsan Habib Khan.
