Dhaka, June 26 (V7N) – Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal is scheduled to be produced in court today, Thursday (June 26), in connection with a case filed over alleged manipulation of the 12th National Parliament election.
Sources from the investigation team said that the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) will seek a 10-day remand for Awal. He was arrested on Wednesday afternoon (June 25) from a relative’s residence in the Moghbazar area, where he had reportedly been hiding to evade arrest.
DMP Joint Commissioner (South) Mohammad Nasirul Islam confirmed the arrest and stated that Awal had been changing locations frequently, prompting an expedited operation to detain him.
Awal has been shown arrested in a case filed by the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. The case, filed on Sunday (June 22), accuses 24 individuals—including former election commissioners—of altering election results and unlawfully influencing the administration during the last three parliamentary polls.
Notably, another former CEC, KM Nurul Huda, was earlier detained from his residence in Uttara. He was later taken to the DB office following his arrest. A 10-day remand was sought for Huda as well, but the court granted a 4-day remand instead.
The BNP has demanded accountability from top officials of the Election Commission, accusing them of undermining democratic processes and electoral transparency during their tenure.
