Dhaka, June 16 (V7N) — The International Crimes Tribunal is set to hold a hearing today (Monday) on the framing of formal charges in the case of crimes against humanity against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three others. A three-member bench headed by the tribunal’s chairman, Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder, will preside over the proceedings.
Along with Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun are named as co-accused in the case.
Earlier, on June 1, the tribunal took cognizance of the charges and issued arrest warrants against Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and Abdullah Al Mamun.
According to the charge sheet submitted by the prosecution, Sheikh Hasina has been accused of responsibility for the killing of approximately 1,400 students and civilians across the country between July 16 and August 5 of last year. The prosecution alleges that these killings were carried out by law enforcement agencies and members of the Awami League, Bangladesh Chhatra League, and Jubo League under her direct orders, incitement, and instigation.
It is further alleged that deadly weapons were used to suppress the protest movements during that period at the direction of the former Prime Minister. The prosecution has claimed to have gathered substantial evidence in support of the charges.
The hearing on the framing of formal charges is expected to be a significant step in this high-profile case, which has drawn considerable national and international attention.
Further developments will depend on the tribunal's decision following today’s hearing.
