DHAKA, Aug 08 (V7N) – Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus today announced that he will send a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner to initiate the process for holding a national election before the next Ramadan, which is expected to begin in February 2026.

In a televised speech delivered at 8:20 pm on the occasion of July Uprising Day, Yunus said, "Now it is our turn to fulfill our final duty - holding the election. As I address you on this great day, we will enter our final and most important chapter. We will now begin the process of handing over responsibility to an elected government."

Ramadan is anticipated to begin in Bangladesh on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. By setting this deadline, the Chief Adviser is aiming to ensure a smooth transition of power to a democratically elected government within the next several months.

Yunus expressed his hope that a successful and peaceful election would allow the citizens of Bangladesh to move forward in building a "New Bangladesh." He pledged the interim government's full support, stating, "We, on behalf of the government, will provide all kinds of help and cooperation so that this election can be conducted in a fair, peaceful and festive manner."

He urged all citizens, particularly those who are currently away from their constituencies, to begin preparations to elect the best candidates. "As we cast our vote, let the faces of those who shed their fresh blood to restore this precious (voting) right appear before our eyes,” he said, referencing the martyrs of the July Uprising.

The Chief Adviser emphasized the importance of high voter turnout in the upcoming election, which will be the first in many years that a significant portion of the population will feel they can participate in freely. "For many years, no one of us could exercise our right to vote. This time, we all will cast our votes. No one will be left out," he stated.

AMM Nasir Uddin was appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner on November 21, 2024. The Chief Adviser's press secretary previously stated that the election would be held on schedule without delay, and today's speech reinforces that commitment to an election timeline.
