Jhalokathi, Sept 11 (V7N) – A tragic incident has surfaced at Sohag Clinic & Diagnostic Center in Rajapur, where alleged medical negligence and incorrect treatment by clinic staff reportedly led to the death of one of a set of twin newborns. The incident occurred after the twins were delivered via cesarean section at Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, Barishal.
According to the father of the newborns, day laborer Md. Uzzal Khan of North Bagri village, his wife, 29-year-old Nupur Khatun, became ill during pregnancy and was first taken to Sohag Clinic on July 7. Clinic staff, including M.H. Naeem, performed an ultrasound and informed the family that the fetus was in a breech position, prescribing medication and sending them home. On August 31, Dr. M.D.H. Sharif Bhuiya again performed an ultrasound, noting low fetal weight, and sent the patient home with further medication.
On September 3 and 8, Nupur, in worsening condition, visited the clinic. Dr. Farhana Afrin reportedly recommended hospitalization and a cesarean section, administering injections, saline, and other medications. Due to her critical condition, she was referred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. On September 8 at 6:50 pm, the cesarean section delivered the twins, but one newborn died in the ICU.
The family alleges that Sohag Clinic’s reports incorrectly indicated that only one fetus was present, omitting the twin pregnancy, which contributed to the tragic outcome. The surviving twin and the mother remain in critical condition in the ICU. Following the incident, when the family contacted the clinic owner, Ahsan Habib Sohag, they allege he responded with threats.
Sohag, the clinic owner, stated that any staff or doctor found responsible will face action after investigation. He claimed that proper pain management was administered and that the death could be due to natural complications of a seven-month delivery.
Rajapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge, (OC) Ismail Hossain confirmed that the complaint has been filed and that a formal investigation will determine appropriate legal measures.
