Dharamsala, July 03 (V7N) — India has strongly protested against China’s attempt to interfere in the selection of the next Dalai Lama. Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju made it clear that the decision regarding the Dalai Lama’s successor rests solely with the Dalai Lama himself.

Speaking at an event in Dharamsala on Thursday marking the 90th birthday of the Dalai Lama, Rijiju said, “The position of the Dalai Lama is significant not only for Tibet but also for his followers across the world. The right to choose his successor is his alone. This is a purely religious matter and has nothing to do with politics.”

Rijiju, along with Janata Dal (U) leader Lallan Singh, represented India at the celebrations.

Context of the Dispute

The Dalai Lama’s office had earlier clarified in a 2011 statement that the Gaden Phodrang Trust would be responsible for determining his successor. The members of the trust will make this decision, the office noted.

However, China continues to assert its claim over the succession process. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning recently stated that “the determination of the Dalai Lama’s successor must comply with Chinese laws and historical traditions.”

India’s stance is firm—such demands from China are unacceptable. The spiritual succession of the Dalai Lama will be decided solely within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, without external interference.
