Pabna, June 29 (V7N) — In a decisive operation aimed at eradicating syndicate control from Pabna Mental Hospital, law enforcement authorities arrested nine individuals acting as illegal intermediaries, commonly referred to as "dalals," on Sunday morning. The detainees were sentenced to one month in jail by a mobile court operating under the jurisdiction of the Pabna district administration.
The raid, carried out at approximately 10:00 AM in the hospital’s outpatient department, was the result of intelligence provided by the National Security Intelligence (NSI). Officials from the NSI and district administration coordinated with local police to detain the suspects on the spot.
Later in the day, Executive Magistrate and Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Pabna Sadar Upazila, Murad Hossain, presided over a mobile court that sentenced the nine to a month of imprisonment for harassing and exploiting patients and their families.
The convicted individuals were identified as Mukarrom Hossain (50), Zohurul Islam (42), Halim Sheikh (40), Manik Mondol (24), Shafiqul Sheikh (55), Sabit Ali (19), Munnaf Hossain (31), Jewel Rana (30), and Alomgir Hossain (35). Most of the detainees are residents of Hemayetpur and surrounding areas of Pabna, while one hails from Chapainawabganj.
According to officials, these individuals had been operating around the hospital premises for a long time, exploiting patients—particularly those traveling from remote areas—through fraudulent and coercive means. The NSI had received numerous reports of such harassment, prompting Sunday’s operation.
Confirming the arrests, Hemayetpur Police Outpost In-Charge Tarikul Islam said, “Acting on a tip-off, we detained the suspects with the assistance of the NSI. The mobile court promptly sentenced them. We only assisted with the operation and will now proceed with the formal process of sending them to jail.”
Officials stated that the district administration will continue monitoring the hospital to ensure a safe and harassment-free environment for patients.
