Charlotte, June 25 (V7N) – Portuguese giants Benfica secured a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup last 16 and topped Group C with a narrow 1-0 victory over German champions Bayern Munich at the Bank of America Stadium.

Despite the defeat, Vincent Kompany's Bayern had already ensured qualification for the knockout stage, finishing second in the group with 6 points from three matches.

Benfica stunned Bayern early, scoring in the 13th minute through Andreas, who capitalized on a rare defensive lapse. While Bayern dominated possession (73%) and registered 13 attempts, including 4 on target, they failed to find the equalizer. Thomas Müller did score once, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

Benfica, with only 27% possession, displayed clinical counter-attacking football and held firm defensively to seal all three points and finish the group stage with 7 points.

Bayern will now face Brazilian side Flamengo in the Round of 16 on June 29, while Benfica await their next opponent as group winners.
