Tangail, June 29 (V7N) — A fierce debate has erupted across the Nagarpur area regarding the construction of a model mosque within the premises of Nagarpur Government College, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the devout local community.

Following persistent appeals from the religious residents of Nagarpur, the authorities decided to build the mosque inside the college grounds. However, on the night of June 28, unidentified miscreants vandalized the site by demolishing the mosque’s foundation stone under the cover of darkness. This incident has provoked widespread anger and tension among the faithful and the local population. Many believe this act to be a premeditated conspiracy.

Earlier, a controversial online news portal, Bhuiforan Online, published a false report opposing the mosque construction, implicating the district administration, which sparked significant public discontent.

In response, on Sunday, June 29, at 11 a.m., the Touhidi Janta organized a massive human chain and protest rally near the gate of Nagarpur Government College. Hundreds of devout locals, along with leaders from various social and religious organizations, participated in the demonstration.

Speakers at the event included Md. Golam Mostafa Golam, General Secretary of Nagarpur Bazar Merchants Association; Nuruzzaman Rana, former General Secretary of Nagarpur Government College; prominent businessmen Md. Babul Mehdi, A. Rajjak, Shamim Ahmed, Lovlu Mia, Mansur Mia; and social worker Mir Mushfiq Shaibal, among others.

In their speeches, the speakers emphasized, "The construction of a model mosque within the government college premises is our faith-driven demand. We will not tolerate any defamation or sabotage against religious institutions. Those responsible for this heinous act must be promptly identified and brought to justice."

They further asserted, "This mosque is not merely a building; it is a symbol of our religious sentiment. We strongly urge the immediate laying of a new foundation stone at the same site and the rapid commencement of construction work."

The participating organizations also appealed to the authorities to take strict legal action against those obstructing the mosque construction and to respect the religious sentiments of Nagarpur residents by ensuring the timely and proper initiation of the mosque-building project.

Although the Upazila administration has yet to issue an official statement, local concerned citizens expressed hope that the authorities would take swift action to restore peace in Nagarpur and implement effective measures to fulfill the demands of the devout community.
