Sylhet, July 30 (V7N) – A court in Sylhet has handed down death sentences to eight accused in the murder case of schoolboy Sumel Ahmed in Bishwanath. Seven others were sentenced to life imprisonment, while the remaining seventeen accused received two-year prison terms.
The verdict was announced on Wednesday afternoon by the Additional District and Sessions Judge Third Court. Of the 32 accused, 31 were present in court during the verdict, while one remains absconding.
The case stems from an incident on May 1, 2021, when a dispute arose between local resident Saiful and Sumel’s relatives over soil cutting for road construction in Chauldhani Haor. The conflict escalated, and Saiful and his associates attacked, resulting in the shooting and death of Sumel, a class 10 student.
Following the murder, Sumel’s uncle filed a case, and police subsequently charged 32 individuals. After recording testimonies from 23 witnesses and hearing arguments, the court delivered its judgment today.
