Dhaka, Aug 18 (V7N) – The Airport Armed Police recovered 887.5 grams (76 bhori) of gold at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Sunday (August 17), arresting three individuals in connection with the incident.
The detainees are identified as Md. Saleh Faisal (27), Monirul Islam (34), and Masum Rana (32). Police recovered 293.5 grams, 395 grams, and 199 grams of gold from them respectively.
According to officials, at 9:20 am, gold ornaments weighing 293.5 grams were seized from Saleh Faisal near the roundabout of the departure and arrival terminals. The estimated market value of the ornaments is Tk 36,10,050.
Later, at 10:20 am, Masum Rana was caught at Arrival Terminal No. 2 with 199 grams of gold, while at 1:45 pm, Monirul Islam was detained with 395 grams of gold ornaments near the media corner of the same terminal. The gold seized from Monirul is valued at Tk 46,21,500.
During interrogation, police learned that the arrestees had long been associated with a gold smuggling syndicate, acting as receivers of contraband brought into Bangladesh by unknown passengers.
Two separate cases have been filed at the Dhaka International Airport Police Station under Section 25B(1)(B)/25D of the Special Powers Act, 1974. In addition, Masum Rana was produced before the Executive Magistrate’s Court for legal action.
Confirming the operation, APBn-13 Operational Commander Police Superintendent Mohammad Mozammel Haque said: “The Airport Armed Police is very vigilant in preventing smuggling and suppressing other crimes in the airport area. We remain in a strong position to curb gold smuggling activities.”
