Dhaka, Dec 19 (V7N) – Cultural Affairs Advisor Mustafa Sarwar Farooqui has said that efforts are underway to identify those responsible for the attack on Chhayanaut, one of the country’s leading cultural institutions, by reviewing CCTV footage.
He made the remarks while speaking to reporters on Friday after visiting the damaged premises of Chhayanaut.
A group of miscreants attacked the institution on Thursday night, vandalizing the premises, looting valuables, and setting parts of the facility on fire.
Assurance of Justice
Farooqui said that those involved in the attack would be brought to justice.
“Chhayanaut is a national cultural institution. An attack on such an institution is an attack on our collective cultural values,” he said.
Government Support if Requested
The Cultural Affairs Advisor noted that Chhayanaut usually operates with its own funds and does not seek government assistance. However, he assured that the government would provide immediate support if the institution formally requests help for restoration and recovery.
Attempt to Disrupt Democratic Environment
Farooqui described the attack as an attempt to sabotage the upcoming national elections and destabilize the democratic environment.
“What does vandalism have to do with protest?” he asked. “Today, the discussion should have been about Osman Hadi. But by carrying out this attack, someone deliberately changed the focus of public discourse. These forces do not want a democratic environment in the country.”
He further alleged that a group exploited public emotions surrounding Osman Hadi’s death to carry out the destruction.
Investigation Ongoing
Law enforcement agencies are continuing their investigation, with CCTV footage and other evidence being examined to identify the attackers and determine their motives.
