Dhaka, Dec 14 (V7N) — Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah has stated that under the amended law, members of parliament can now be investigated for any alleged irregularities, either jointly by the Speaker and the Election Commission (EC) or individually by either authority.

He made the remarks at an event organized by the Citizen Platform in the capital on Sunday. The commissioner explained that if there is an allegation against an MP, the Speaker can assign the matter to the EC for verification using his own authority.

Sanaullah added that this mechanism has never been practiced in Bangladesh before, but the recent amendments now empower the EC to initiate investigations independently. If the allegations are proven, the accused MP may lose their parliamentary seat.
