Dinajpur, Aug 9 (V7N)– Shipping Advisor Brigadier General (Retd) Dr. M Sakhawat Hossain stated that land ports with low import-export activity and operating at a deficit will be closed. Speaking during an inspection at Hili land port on Saturday morning, he said that out of 24 land ports, eight are planned for closure, with four already shut down.
Dr. Sakhawat Hossain added that while smaller ports are being phased out, major ports are undergoing modernization. Additionally, efforts are underway to hand over some river ports to the private sector for management.
Earlier in the day, he met with customs officials and traders at Hili port, where concerns were raised about road repairs, warehouse facilities, and infrastructure improvements.
Bangladesh Land Ports Authority Chairman Manzarul Mannan, Rangpur Divisional Commissioner of Customs Arun Kumar, and others accompanied the advisor during the visit.
