Dhaka, June 25 (V7N) – Chief Advisor to the Interim Government Dr. Muhammad Yunus inaugurated the World Environment Day and National Tree Plantation Campaign-2025, along with the Environment and Tree Fair 2025, at the China Friendship Conference Center in the capital on Wednesday morning.
In his speech, Dr. Yunus emphasized the urgency of protecting the environment and biodiversity, warning that improper plastic waste management poses a grave threat to the planet’s existence.
“Plastic has become such a force that it’s shouting: either we will exist or you will exist. The two cannot coexist,” he said. “If we fail to wake up now and solve the plastic pollution crisis, our very survival will be at stake.”
Dr. Yunus also highlighted that the interim government has initiated several steps aimed at restoring the environment and wildlife. He expressed hope that if these initiatives are implemented properly, wildlife will begin to return to their natural habitats.
Pointing to the pivotal role of youth, the Chief Advisor said:
“People are regularly destroying the environment that is essential for life. But the youth demonstrated extraordinary strength last July. They are the torchbearers of a new Bangladesh and must take the lead in tackling climate change.”
Environment Advisor Syeda Rizwana Hasan, who also spoke at the event, shared the government's recent achievements in environmental conservation. She stated that 11,459 acres of forest land, 20 canals, and 4 rivers have been reclaimed. She further noted that all supermarkets are now 100% free of polythene bags.
As part of the occasion, 31 individuals and organizations were honored for their exceptional contributions to environmental protection and biodiversity conservation.
The Environment and Tree Fair will continue for several days, showcasing green innovations, tree-planting initiatives, and public awareness campaigns to promote sustainable living.
