Dhaka, June 27 (V7N) — Renowned actor Jahid Hasan has called for a stronger focus on mental health infrastructure, noting that just as every district requires a hospital for physical health, it also needs a cinema hall for mental well-being.
Speaking after a special screening of the Eid film Utsob at Star Cineplex in Bashundhara City on Thursday evening, Hasan emphasized the importance of wholesome entertainment in keeping people away from addiction, violence, and mob justice.
“Alongside education, health, and housing, we need movie theaters for entertainment,” Hasan said. “Good entertainment helps people avoid addiction, violence, and mob rule.”
Hasan, who plays the central character Zahangir in Utsob, admitted he still carries the role with him. He explained that each of us harbors a mix of heroism and villainy—that awareness drives personal growth.
“I’m still immersed in this character. Zahangir reflects something in all of us. We have heroism, villainy, and the ability to realize who we are. If that realization stays with us, those of us like Zahangir today can be better tomorrow.”
Noting a shift in Eid film trends toward action and thrillers, he praised Utsob, a family comedy-drama, for winning hearts this holiday. He attributed its success to the dedication of the entire team—“from production boys to the stars,” he said—and their commitment to honest storytelling.
“We were all sincere. There was no dishonesty in our acting. I think that sincerity is a big reason for our success. Each scene in the film is tied to our emotions.”
After the COVID-19 pandemic, roles were few and far between for Hasan. He revealed that Utsob is his first post-pandemic feature. “Opportunities didn’t come much in recent years. Utsob offered me the chance again,” he said, adding, “I acted, and from the audience’s response, I realize I didn’t fail.”
Hasan also lamented the lack of cinema halls outside the capital, which limits many people’s access to film. He urged district commissioners to take action.
“I’m from Sirajganj. My sister called and said there’s no cinema hall here, so we can’t watch any movie. That hurt me,” he said. “This is true for many large towns in our country. I urge district commissioners and responsible authorities to initiate and implement efforts to establish a cinema hall in every district.”
Directed by Tanim Noor, Utsob stars Jahid Hasan alongside Jaya Ahsan, Apu Karim, Chanchal Chowdhury, Afsana Mimi, Tariq Anam Khan, Azad Abul Kalam, Intekhab Dinar, Sunerah Binte Kamal, Saumya Jyoti, and Sadia Ayman.
