Chittagong, Aug 28 (V7N) – The Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) and Hall Parliament elections are scheduled to be held on October 12, ending a 34-year wait for a full student council election.

The Election Commission issued the schedule in a notification signed by Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr. Monir Uddin and Member Secretary Professor Dr. AKM Ariful Haque Siddiqui on Thursday (August 28). Key dates include the publication of the draft voter list on September 1, distribution of nomination papers on September 14, scrutiny on September 16, publication of the primary candidate list on September 21, last day for withdrawal on September 23, and publication of the final candidate list on September 25.

Earlier, the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin said that preparations for the elections are almost complete, with the Election Commission office to be set up on the second floor of the CUCSU building. He confirmed that the voter list is nearly finalized and that the election code of conduct will be published soon.

The elections follow the approval of a new CUCSU constitution in the 559th syndicate meeting on August 1. Changes include an increase in the number of executive committee posts from 18 to 28, a maximum age limit of 30 years for candidates and members, and a reduction in the number of executive members from 10 to 5.

Chittagong University was established in 1966, and the first CUCSU election was held in 1970. Although elections were intended to be held every academic year, only six elections have taken place due to confrontations, clashes among student organizations, and unsuitable conditions. The last election was held on February 8, 1990.
