Dhaka, June 23 (V7N) – A Dhaka court has ordered the imprisonment of Sabina Akter Tuhin, former president of the Dhaka North unit of the Jubo Mohila League and a former Member of Parliament from a reserved women's seat, in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
On Monday, police produced Tuhin before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka following her arrest late Sunday night from her father’s residence in Aona village, under Sholla Union in Nawabganj upazila on the outskirts of the capital.
During the court hearing, the investigation officer requested that the accused be held in jail until the investigation is completed. Tuhin’s legal counsel, on the other hand, filed a bail petition. After hearing arguments from both sides, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman rejected the bail plea and ordered that she be sent to prison.
The Charges
According to case documents, on the morning of April 4, around 7:00 AM, a group of 14 to 15 individuals—including leaders and activists from the now-banned student and youth wings of the Awami League, namely the Chhatra League and Jubo League—held a procession in front of the Ministry of Planning in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of Dhaka.
The group, reportedly led by former Jubo Mohila League vice-president Ishrat Jahan Nasrin, demanded the resignation of Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who has been named in the case as the chief adviser to the allegedly banned political group. Police claim the procession was part of a broader attempt to revive the activities of a proscribed organization and incite acts of terrorism, thereby threatening national unity, public security, and sovereignty.
Upon seeing police presence, the group reportedly dispersed. Later that day, police filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, naming several individuals and accusing them of conspiring against the state.
Political and Legal Implications
Sabina Akter Tuhin’s arrest has drawn attention in political and legal circles, particularly due to her previous positions within the ruling party’s affiliated organizations and her status as a former parliamentarian. While authorities have not commented publicly on whether more arrests are expected, sources within the law enforcement agency confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and further action may follow.
The arrest also highlights the government’s increasing use of anti-terror legislation to counter what it claims are threats from banned or radicalized political factions.
