Dhaka, Dec 22 (V7N) - At the start of Poush, dense fog has settled over Dhaka and several regions across Bangladesh, particularly in the northern and western areas, causing daytime temperatures to feel lower and increasing the intensity of winter. The Meteorological Department warns that the fog may thicken over the coming days, raising the risk of cold waves in some areas.
On Sunday morning, Dhaka experienced heavy fog, with brief sunlight around 10:00 a.m., but the fog persisted throughout the day. Similar conditions were observed across the country.
According to the Meteorological Department, the lowest temperature recorded yesterday was 12°C in Rajarhat, Kurigram, followed by 12.2°C in Chuadanga. The highest temperature was 31.4°C in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
Meteorologist Md. Tariful Nawaz Kabir noted that fog is normal during winter, but its increasing density reduces sunlight penetration, making the cold feel more severe. The northern and northwestern divisions, including Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Khulna, are expected to experience thicker fog, which may lower perceived daytime temperatures by 1–3°C and heighten the sensation of cold.
In Rajshahi, the minimum temperature yesterday morning was 13.2°C with 96% humidity, and the afternoon temperature was 15°C. The city remained shrouded in fog all day, and residents reported that the chilly northern winds disrupted daily life.
In Kurigram, the temperature dropped to 12°C at 6:00 a.m., with heavy fog causing delayed boat departures and slow road traffic. Locals, particularly daily laborers, are facing difficulties due to the cold.
In Joypurhat, continuous western winds and dense fog for four days have nearly paralyzed daily activities. Road traffic moved slowly with headlights on, and transport workers faced passenger shortages. The minimum temperature was 12.9°C, with fog so thick it resembled light rain.
Hospitals report a rise in cold-related illnesses, affecting children and the elderly most. Authorities advise residents to remain indoors when possible.
The Meteorological Department warns that although temperatures are not extremely low, the combination of fog and icy winds will increase the perception of cold over the next few days, urging extra caution in northern and western regions.
